Safe Paws Partnership

The Safe Paws Partnership is a new initiative between Women’s Shelter, Saakaate
House and The Leo Project, a registered charity that exists to remove barriers for
veterinary care access for pets and their families. This partnership will offer support for
women and families escaping violence by ensuring that their pets – often critical
sources of comfort and stability – can access veterinary care including routine
vaccinations, spay/neuter, and dewormer, as well as any emergency or medical care
they may require. This initiative removes a major barrier to leaving abusive
environments and promotes healing for the entire family.

When survivors are forced to choose between their own safety and the safety of their
pets, they may remain in dangerous situations longer than they otherwise would. By
ensuring survivors have access to veterinary care, the Safe Paws Partnership will allow
survivors to leave abusive situations without leaving pets behind.

The Safe Paws Partnership will deliver the following supports to shelter clients and their
pets:
- Initial veterinary check-ups upon entering shelter
- Core vaccinations, parasite prevention, and spay/neuter services
- Emergency or urgent care for illness or injury
- Food, supplies, and basic pet care resources
- Ongoing veterinary support during a survivor’s stay in shelter and into transitional
housing.
